City of Zeeland
| The City of Zeeland has been a City of Character for almost two years now. They have monthly meetings with employees featuring a special speaker who gives a talk about the character trait of the month and goes over the bulletin.
Now that the program has taken hold at the City of Zeeland, it is easy to sense that the employees appreciate the time focused on learning the importance of building good character. The City of Zeeland enthusiastically spreads good character throughout the community. Tim Klunder 21 S. Elm Street Zeeland, MI 49464 | | | Crown Motors

We at Crown Motors believe that building
character is essential to building a strong business and a strong community. We
are committed to making a difference in the lives of the people we touch as
employers and business owners; as well as the people we come into contact with
as citizens of our communities.

| The Family Research Council champions marriage and family as the
foundation of civilization, the seedbed of virtue, and the wellspring of
society. We shape public debate and formulate public policy that values
human life and upholds the institutions of marriage and the family.
Believing that God is the author of life, liberty, and the family, we
promote the Judeo-Christian worldview as the basis for a just, free, and
stable society. Scott Potter 11311 James Street Holland, MI 49424 | | | Freedom Village

Serving Seniors is our Pleasure.
At Freedom Village Retirement Resort, our
business is not simply about service – it’s about serving. It’s our
pleasure to transcend the standard idea of retirement living by creating an
atmosphere that is "active, exhilarating and cheerful."
A wide and impressive variety of recreational,
educational, cultural, spiritual, and social opportunities is offered to our
residents. We are also able to provide a continuum of quality healthcare
services on-site, and as such are specifically designed for a new generation of
seniors who want to enjoy an active, fulfilling lifestyle, and who also want the
additional security of available healthcare services, just in case.
The Best of Life…in the style you deserve.

| Hospice of Holland provides the most compassionate and highest quality end-of-life care through physical, emotional and spiritual support.
Providing high quality and compassionate care to patients and families facing advanced illness and bereavement requires a certain kind of staff; staff with patience and understanding, staff with integrity and expertise…staff with character. The Character First training will assist Hospice of Holland in further developing its already excellent staff’s ability to provide the most compassionate and highest quality care to patients and families. Susan DeYoung 270 Hoover Blvd. Holland, MI 49423 | | | ISG
| In the search for a corporate wide
culture-defining program, ISG evaluated several motivational, character and team
building programs. The Character First! initiative was chosen because of its
focus on the positive characteristics of those who make a company successful.
With this program, ISG
strives to be a leading technology solutions provider guided by our principles
of integrity, character and compassion.
Skills, once learned, can be maintained and improved with practice.
Character, by contrast, is a developed moment-by-moment by the decisions we
make. Character First! was created
and sponsored by Michigan Family Forum. It
is an extremely well organized initiative involving individual and group
training modules for each of the 49 traits.
Leadership training is mandatory and attendance at local monthly
leadership update meetings is encouraged. The
actual training curriculum is designed for implementation monthly over the
course of approximately 4 years. Continuous
activities supporting the initiative depend upon the creativity and enthusiasm
of the leadership within each corporation.

Kandu
Incorporated is a not-for-profit organization that couples a menu of business,
product and service offerings with our overarching mission of building work
skills and creating opportunities for people with employment barriers.
We have
been in business for over 50 years. In that time, our company has grown
from its roots as a provider of employment for people with disabilities to a
diverse corporation with a thriving picture frame manufacturing division and
an in-demand industries services business. We have not, however,
abandoned our roots. Today our services have expanded in both the
numbers of clients we service and the businesses and organizations with which
we partner in the creation of employment opportunities.
We
value growth and innovation
We
value our customers
We
value our people
We
value our community and the resources it provides.
Kandu
began using the Character First model in our employee selection process in
2002. We have improved our hiring results by asking character based
questions of all our applicants. Our goal is to determine their skill
level (what they can do) and their behavior level (how they get the work
done). Character First is a great tool and we hope to continue to expand
how we utilize this concept within our organization.

| A Prayer to Serve
Just as Jesus served the least of our brothers and
sisters, so must I.
Just as Jesus knelt and bathed the feet of his disciples, so must I reach
out with open hands and heart and humbly serve my neighbor.
“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual
fervor, serving the Lord.”
Romans 12:11
“To honor God in all we do, to help people develop, to pursue excellence,
and to grow profitably.”
